The Insight
Mountains are the symbol of permanence. In Arabic poetry and in every ancient culture, mountains represent what cannot change, what outlasts everything, what cannot be moved. So when the Quran says mountains are moving, it overturns the deepest human assumption about them. «You see the mountains and think them fixed. But they shall pass away like the passing of clouds.» The verse does not say mountains will move at some future moment. It says: you think them fixed, right now, in ordinary observation. The implication is that they are already moving, and you simply cannot perceive it. Modern geology: plate tectonics. Every continent sits on a tectonic plate in constant motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle below. The Himalayas are rising by approximately 5 millimetres per year as the Indian plate pushes into the Eurasian plate. The Atlantic Ocean is widening. The Andes are shifting westward. Every mountain range on Earth is in measurable, continuous motion, invisible to the naked eye but confirmed by GPS measurements and decades of geological study. The theory of continental drift was proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 and was widely rejected for decades as absurd. Plate tectonics was only accepted by the scientific community in the 1960s, after ocean floor spreading was confirmed by magnetic anomaly data. For all of human history before that point, the permanence of mountains was not just assumed; it was considered geological fact. The Quran stated the opposite, plainly, fourteen centuries earlier.
