The Insight
The verse describes a moment that, for most of Islamic history, was read as either a literal divine miracle or a poetic metaphor. Modern entomology has settled the question differently. Ants communicate through two primary systems: pheromones (chemical signals released into the environment) and stridulation (vibrations produced by rubbing body parts that travel through the substrate). Both systems are colony-specific and information-dense. When a threat is detected, worker ants release alarm pheromones that cause nearby ants to halt, retreat, and take defensive positions, precisely the warning described in the verse. The ant warns her colony of an approaching army and tells them to enter their dwellings. This is exactly the behavioural response triggered by danger pheromones in real ant colonies. What modern science took until the 20th century to document, the Quran described as ordinary natural behaviour 1,400 years earlier.
