ثُمَّ سَوَّاهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ ۖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ
Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His soul, and made for you hearing, sight, and hearts.
Reflection
At the moment of creation, the Quran lists hearing before sight, and this order holds across more than ten verses. Modern embryology explains why: the cochlea is complete by week 20, while the retina continues developing through birth. That sequence was impossible to observe without modern imaging.
أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا
Or like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hand, he will not see it.
Reflection
The Quran's description of layered impenetrable oceanic darkness aligns with the modern discovery that sunlight cannot penetrate beyond 200 metres depth.
