The Insight
The verses were revealed around 614 CE, immediately after the Byzantines had been decisively defeated by the Persian Sassanid Empire, losing Jerusalem, Egypt, and Syria in a series of crushing defeats. The Quraysh mocked the early Muslims, saying Rome would never recover. The Quran declared: 'The Romans have been defeated, but they, after their defeat, will overcome, within a few years.' The Arabic bid'i sinin (بِضْعِ سِنِين) means 3–9 years, a specific, falsifiable window. In 622 CE, Emperor Heraclius launched a dramatic counter-offensive. By 628 CE the Byzantines had completely reversed the war, defeating Persia and recapturing all lost territory. The prophecy was publicly known, the Quraysh made bets against it. Its fulfilment within the stated timeframe is documented in Byzantine, Persian, and Islamic historical records simultaneously.
