The Insight
In 628 CE, the Muslims were turned back at Hudaybiyyah. The treaty, negotiated from weakness, barred them from entering Mecca and required them to return home without performing pilgrimage. The companions were stunned, Umar ibn al-Khattab directly asked the Prophet whether this was not a humiliation. Yet the surah revealed in the aftermath opened with a declaration. Quran 48:1 states: 'Indeed, We have given you a clear victory.' Then it went further. Quran 48:27 states: 'You will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and shortened, not fearing anyone.' This was declared at the very moment they had just been refused entry to Mecca. It named the place, the manner, the shaved heads of completed pilgrimage, and the condition, safety without fear. Any one of these failing would have falsified it. In 630 CE, just two years later, the Quraysh violated the treaty, the Muslim army marched, and Mecca surrendered with almost no resistance, one of the most complete and bloodless conquests in recorded history. The Muslims entered the Sacred Mosque exactly as described, in safety, performing the very pilgrimage they had been denied. Every specific detail of the prediction was fulfilled.
