The Thirty-Month Equation Al-Ahqaf

Two verses, revealed in different contexts, about different subjects, combine into a precise medical calculation. Surah 46:15Al-Ahqaf 46:15وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًاAnd his gestation and weaning is thirty months. states that a mother's gestation and weaning together take thirty months. Surah 2:233Al-Baqarah 2:233وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِMothers may nurse their infants for two whole years, for those who desire to complete the nursing period. states that mothers nurse their children for two complete years, twenty-four months. Subtract: thirty minus twenty-four equals six months minimum pregnancy. This calculation was applied in court by Ali ibn Abi Talib during Caliph Uthman's reign, when a woman who gave birth at six months was accused of illegitimacy. Ali cited both verses, performed the calculation, and overturned the sentence. Modern medicine has established that six months (around 24 weeks) is the earliest point at which a baby's lungs and body are developed enough for survival to be biologically possible, a threshold only reachable today with intensive neonatal care. The two-verse equation produces exactly that minimum, and the Quran never states them together or draws the conclusion itself. It leaves the reader to find it.
