The Insight
Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed late in the Prophet's mission, when he had many powerful enemies and faced repeated plots on his life. Quran 5:67 states: 'And Allah will protect you from the people.' This was a public, falsifiable guarantee, not a private hope. A single successful assassination would have shattered it. The danger was real and documented: enemies plotted to kill him the night of his migration from Mecca, and on one occasion a man named Ghawrath ibn al-Harith seized the Prophet's own sword while he slept and demanded to know who could now protect him. The Prophet answered, 'Allah,' and the attacker faltered and dropped the blade. Most strikingly, after this verse was revealed the Prophet is reported to have dismissed the companions who had been guarding him, saying that God now protected him, removing his own security rather than increasing it. He survived every attempt and died years later of illness, in his own home. He staked the claim publicly, lowered his guard, and was never reached.
