The Insight
Every ancient civilisation had a confident answer about the soul: where it lives, what it is made of, where it goes. The Quran was asked directly and gave the only honest answer available: we do not have enough knowledge. The hard problem of consciousness, why there is subjective experience at all, why physical processes are accompanied by the feeling of being, remains entirely unsolved. Neuroscience can map every neuron, trace every signal, and model every brain state. It cannot explain why any of it feels like anything. Why does red look like something? Why does pain hurt rather than simply triggering behaviour? Philosophers consider it the hardest question in all of thought. David Chalmers named it formally in 1995. It remains open. The Quran's 7th-century response, 'of knowledge you have been given only a little', is the most scientifically accurate position any ancient text has ever taken on this question. It did not invent an answer. It told the truth.
