يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِنَ الْبَعْثِ فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ مُضْغَةٍ مُخَلَّقَةٍ وَغَيْرِ مُخَلَّقَةٍ

Al-Hajj: 5

"O people, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed."

The Insight

The verse does not describe a sequence, formed then unformed. It describes both states existing at the same time: mukhallaqatin wa ghayri mukhallaqatin, formed and unformed simultaneously. Modern embryology confirms this is precisely accurate. At the mudghah stage, the embryo develops in a head-to-tail direction, a process called cephalocaudal development. While upper segments are already organised and structured, the lower segments have not yet formed. The embryo is, at one and the same moment, partly built and partly not. This cannot be observed with the naked eye. It was only confirmed through microscopic examination of embryonic tissue in the modern era. The verse captures not a stage, but a state, one that requires cellular-level observation to verify.
